===== From spanky@wpi.edu: I gave this high marks for technical difficulty ===== From rotht@televar.com: Interesting interpretation :-> ===== From mikko.oksalahti@dosetek.varian.com: Unnatural but somehow appealing. ===== From jamez@xover.ml.org: jus nature, kiddo! ===== From gregj56590@aol.com: Nice beard. ===== From d97ta@efd.lth.se: what happened to his cheek bones? gone missing in all the format conversions? the hair is falling a bit too straight, did you use gravity in your ballistic.inc? the eye texture is just plain awful... oh, and he looks more like moses than darwin ;) ===== From marc_w@ncx.com: the hair is awesome! the skin is better then i could do but i think the eyes and the wrinkles aren't up to the rest of the images quality. ===== From simon.davis@altavista.net: I thought it was God(tm) at first. I know it's a great model but it looks like clay. The background could be more relevent perhaps (a large tortoise?). ===== From buck@cs.byu.edu: The concept is good, but you might have considered spending at least as much time on the island and the background as you did on Darwin. The textures on the island could use a bit more variety, I think. Darwin looks great. I love your ballistic macro--makes me anxious to get my hands on POV 3.1. :) The bump-map on the face is a nice touch. It's probably one of the most detailed faces I've seen in POV--well done! Your water is nicely done, too. ===== From beliaev@utu.fi: Do you suggest that Nature ===== From djconnel@flash.net: The ballistic hair is of great technical interest, but the result looks more like a mop than hair. The concept is an interesting one... while a human is clearly the focus of the scene, there is nature in the human figure, and it is the natural aspects of this one which are stressed. The sky is a bit surreal, though, IMO. ===== From bill@apocalypse.org: The hair, while technically interesting, doesn't artistically look that great - thick and wirey. The "carved" face also makes the image look more like a sculpture. ===== From ethelm@bigfoot.com: Good effort with a very difficult subject. The hair is too thick and looks like wire. ===== From 101741.541@compuserve.com: I like the "carved" flesh effect, makes me think the following : you could have made a wooden head, and use the same macro to create some foliage and branches replacing the hair and beard; a vegetable-Darwin, so to speak. ===== From arcana@sinbad.net: The hair is showing promise, but will require a lot more fiddling before it can look good this close to the camera. The wrinkles on the face are coming across to me more as carvings in wood than wrinkles. This is strengthened by the eyes. Did you try cutting out the eye sections, and placing scaled spheres for eyes? ===== From gmccarter@hotmail.com: Memorable image, but I don't think POV-Ray is quite up to the task of producing realistic portraits. Superb effort, though. Looks like a wood carving. Great age spots on the skin texture. Hair is quite coarse. How did you do the eyes? They look like image maps on the surface, rather than modelled spheres with depth and transparency. ===== From r@199.45.245.103: Very nice work on the sky. The water and the ground fog are also very effective. The heightfield looks a little too blocky tho (did you smooth it?). Your hair system shows promise, although it seems too straight (it seems to defy gravity). The #1 thing you could do to improve this image is to redo the eyes- I'd do them as real spheres with glass lenses. Darwin's left eye, in particular, looks too flat.
